Woods and Water - Dick Herfindahl
I am looking forward to visiting the cabin once again. For some reason (snow) it seems like a long winter. Thanks to my two sons, I haven’t had to shovel one scoop of snow. I have to say that they take very good care of Mom and Dad.
I can’t wait until I am able to be sitting in the cabin...
I now have a milestone Birthday in the books. You only turn 80 once so it is now behind me and I am looking forward to seeing what lies ahead. I am now looking forward to spring more than ever. Just the thought of open water makes me feel rejuvenated and ready for another fishing season.

Here are some pictures of my grandsons, Dylan, Trevor, Grant and Taylor eating by the campfire. Another is of Trevor teaching Dylan and Taylor how to clean fish. There is also a picture of young Trevor and Taylor showing off a nice catch from our lake, and also a picture of Trevor holding the first perch that he caught in our lake. He earned $5 from Grandpa for the fish. He cleaned the fish after the picture was taken.
When I think back over the years that brought me to the present time, I am grateful that I have reached the age of 80. It is not without a few scares and some health concerns, but here I am. I try to appreciate what I have; my two sons, and daughters-in-law, my grandkids, their significant others...
When I look back at it, I am grateful to have been raised in the country. As a kid I caught frogs, toads, turtles and tadpoles in the “crick.” Summer was a time to explore the nearby slough, build forts and play cowboys and Indians. We would take turns being our favorite cowboy heroes and there...
There are times when I look back to my days as a youth and reflect on my parents and my relatives who had an influence on my childhood. My parents were a great influence on my love of the outdoors.
My dad was a horseman and we always had horses. We lived on Bridge Avenue on an acre of land...
There are times when a snowfall can be a relaxing experience. I am not talking about when it occurs enough to be a backbreaker, but when it is just enough to cover the ground. When it snows at home, it comes with rules. You need to shovel the sidewalk, especially for the mail carrier. I can...
We finally had our last Christmas of the season. It was good to spend time with some of the grandsons, their significant others and our great granddaughter, Avery. It was a fun day and I believe that everyone had a good time.
I am really wanting to get back to doing a little painting. I...
I can’t believe the weather that we have been having lately. It has been more like in March, so as a true Minnesotan I know that we will pay for this eventually.
The light sprinkling of fresh snow that we received the other day gave the ground a fresh look, if only for a few hours. As I...
This past holiday season was a very good one. I got to eat my share of lutefisk and lefse, which makes it nice, but spending time with family is what really makes it special.
The Minnesota DNR has many winter activities available for you to try. Listed here are a few favorite outdoor...
Since Christmas is now in the rearview mirror, it is time to move into the new year. Last year, I was lucky enough to welcome a great grandson, Krew. We also celebrated our great granddaughter Avery’s 2nd Birthday. I can remember the special feeling that I had when my sons were born. Then it was...
