Shown here are some pictures of Brian and his boys clearing the woods.

Anticipation is the best part of vacation

Anticipation is sometimes the best part of a vacation. One of my old friends said that one time about taking vacation and it still holds true today. This was in the 70’s and it is still something that holds true today.

As I sit here thinking about my first trip to the cabin, I am reflecting back to some of my past vacations. I can still feel the excitement that I had when we first purchased the land. The dreams were just starting to form in my mind. On our first visit to our dream, we were there to clear some trees and make a driveway. It was a lot of work, but once the trees were cut down and the driveway was made and a space was cleared for the camper. We were on the way. Next, it was time to bring the camper up there. My sons, Brian and Brad, along with my oldest grandson, Trevor. We had to really work at getting the camper situated in the right spot. Once the camper was in place, it was already feeling like “our” cabin.

We spent our winter planning for the next spring. My son, Brian, and his two oldest sons, Trevor and Taylor, went up there with me in the spring. We brought a 4-wheeler with us. That weekend we cut down trees and cleared a place for our cabin to be built. Brian ran the chainsaw and did all of the cutting while Trevor drove the 4-wheeler and dragged the cut-up logs over for Taylor and me to stack. Taylor and I also dragged the small branches and brush. And stacked it in the woods. We had the area cleared in a day and a half and had to head home on Sunday. Those two boys worked hard, knowing they would get rewarded in the long run.

We had help going forward from the boys, Brian’s brother-in-law Travis, and Travis’ Uncle Jerry. I also had a friend, Mark, go up with me to help Sheetrock and later to help us with siding. Everyone pitching in truly made it a family cabin.

Later on. The grandkids got rewarded by being able to have some great fishing while they were growing up. At my stage in life, I get much more satisfaction out of seeing the kids catch fish than when I do myself. I must admit, the kid in me still gets a great feeling when I catch a fish.

Until next time: I can’t wait until I get to wet a line on one of our area lakes. The way the winter was, I have a feeling that the summer will be giving up plenty of fish around the area.

Please take the time to remember our troops that are serving now and those that have served before them. They are the reason that we have all of the Freedoms that we enjoy today.
