Woods and Water - Dick Herfindahl

When my son and I left for “up north” on Saturday morning, it seemed like a decent morning. Once we got north of the Cites, it got cloudy and there were numerous lightning strikes. As we drove further north, it started to rain. By the time we reached Grand Rapids, it had cleared up and the sun...
With the hint of fall that we have experienced the past week, I felt rejuvenated. Alas, we did have some temperatures in the 80’s, but it still cooled down nicely at night. I am not telling you anything that you don’t already know, but I love having the best of both worlds.   I am looking...

Shown here is a picture taken while at the cabin in the fall over the years. Also pictured is one of the area lakes.

I have been enjoying the fall-like weather that we have been experiencing these past few days. We have started to swing back into warmer days, but the nights are still cooling down nicely. This is typical for late summer and early fall. When I was at the cabin a couple of weeks ago, I noticed...

Shown here is a picture of my grandson’s first real hunting day of the year. He is shown here with his favorite hunting companion, Maggie.

I just read an article in my latest copy of Outdoor News that shows how low people can stoop. A driver in Wright County seemed to think it would be cool to run over two adult Trumpeter Swans and three chicks. According to the tire marks, this person went out of their way to do this.   A few...
I have returned from an extended stay at the cabin and the weather cooperated this time. It was warm (not hot) during the days and nice and cool at night. Simply perfect weather for getting things done.   After I had cut this fallen birch tree up enough to get my pickup up to the cabin and...

Shown here are a couple of pictures that were captured on the game camera at the cabin. One is a picture of some old guy on a riding lawn mower.

I am, once again writing my column from the comfort of our cabin. My trip went well until I got to the cabin. I was greeted to the sight of a large birch tree that had fallen across the driveway. It was at the very beginning of the driveway, so I had to navigate my way to the cabin on foot to...
I still have not been able to do much fishing this year, but hopefully that will change in the next week or so. I am hoping to get up to the cabin in the very near future. My boat must be missing me by now, so I will attempt to rectify that on my next visit.   Whenever I go to the cabin, it...
It is good to be back home and taking a break from the heat that I was broiling in while at the cabin. I actually cannot remember a week at the cabin that was that hot. It was like when I was a kid when there was no air conditioning. I did have two fans at the cabin, which was one more than we...
This week I am writing my column from the confines of our cabin. I know that it has happened before, but I cannot say that I can ever remember visiting the cabin when the weather has been this consistently hot. Luckily, I did most of the mowing on Friday; after I had finished unpacking, I tried...

I have always loved spending some alone time on the lake and observing nature up close and personal. Here are some pictures that were taken over the years. These pictures were taken a couple of days after I had attended the 2011 fishing opener. I had taken my small boat to a lake a few miles from our cabin to do some fishing. One of the pictures is of one a few free campsites on that lake.

Once again, I am anticipating spending time at the cabin in the near future. I will get to try out my new riding lawnmower. I have never owned one before, so after I bought it, I headed down to my son Brian’s for a little driver’s education. I have been sitting at home for much too long, and I...
