Taking a turn towards winter

The weather has now taken a turn towards winter, at least as far as the temperature is concerned. It would be nice to have a couple of inches of snow for Christmas but only for nostalgia’s sake. 

 

I am waiting to see when the annual lefse making day will be. Every year we get together at my sister Judy’s sometime between Thanksgiving and Christmas to make lefse. We usually have a few family members there to help with the task. This has become a family tradition over the past few years. 

 

My brother-in-law, Lynn, who comes home every fall to archery hunt for deer is still looking for that shot at a deer. He was hoping to get one before slug season. He had a couple of chances, but the weather was a little too warm to hang a deer, so he passed. Hopefully, he will get one before he goes back to Nome.

 

My wife had a birthday last Sunday and our two sons, and their wives along with our grandson Trevor and his significant other Tristen, were there along with along with our granddaughters Emma and Ava. It was a good time, and the guys watched the Vikings try to give the game away while the girls played a card game. I am starting to sound like an old newspaper where they posted when someone went over to so-and-so’s for coffee. I actually miss those days.

 

As we settle into the winter months, I find myself getting even more comfortable in the old recliner. The cold weather never bothered me much in my younger years but as I get older, I feel more comfortable inside than ever before. It seems like the wind has been blowing for the last year without much of a break.

 

As Thanksgiving comes and goes, I will have to start thinking about buying Christmas presents. It gets harder and harder each year to buy presents for the family, money is the easy way out but, to me, it’s not very personal. I always seem to get wrapped up in putting up the Christmas decorations (pun intended). The boys have helped me for the last couple of years but after one of them brings the tree and ornaments down from the attic my granddaughters decorate the tree. This has gotten to be a tradition in the last few years. They have actually been doing it since they were little. 

 

Christmas sneaks up on us too fast and then it’s gone, and we are into January before you know it. So, enjoy the season while you can.

 

Until next time: Small game season is open through Feb. 28thfor squirrel and rabbit until February 28th, 2925. Small game hunting is an excellent way to get our youth started in the sport of hunting. With all of the Wildlife Management Areas (WMA’s) in our county there is plenty of public land to hunt. Check the DNR web page to find the WMAs in any county in the state.

Please show your support for our troops who are now deployed, especially during the holiday season. These service men and women are making that sacrifice so that we may have the many freedoms that we enjoy today.
