Our grandson Trevor keeps us in fish

This is the season for stormy weather that will hopefully bring some rain to our area and the whole state. I am not sure how much rain we received last Sunday night, but it came with wind and tornado warnings. There have been quite a few wildfires going on in northern Minnesota near Duluth, Crosby-Brainerd area and Park Rapids. We have to be mindful of fire warnings and burning bans, especially with the dry spell we have been having.

 

Being the owner of a cabin in northern Minnesota makes me mindful of fires and burning bans. There is not much to do but worry when the cabin sits over 300 miles from where I live. I guess there is not much that I could do about it if I was there either.

 

In a lighter note, I know that there have been a lot of fish being caught on many of the area’s lakes. The crappie bite has still been strong, and pike and bass are also being reported. My brother-in-law, Lynn Johnson, has been having pretty good luck on a few different area lakes.

 

My grandson, Trevor, called me last Sunday and asked if his grandma and I would like him to bring over his fryer, and he would fry up some crappies that he had caught the day before. I told him that would be great. He came over and fried up the crappies, which we devoured. He took me crappie fishing a couple of weeks ago and Jean and I enjoyed a nice meal. Trevor never keeps more fish than he needs for a meal. He doesn’t like to freeze fish because he feels that it doesn’t have that fresh taste once you freeze it.

 

I agree with Trevor, out of the lake and into the pan is always the best. He sure takes good care of Grandpa and Grandma, and we really appreciate it. He fished with us when he was younger and now it seems like he remembers those good times and is returning the favor.

He has taken his grandma and me walleye fishing a couple of times, and when Grandma went, I believe that she caught the first five or six walleyes before Trevor and I caught any. but we finally started catching fish, so it was all good. We always like it when Grandma catches fish.

 

Until next time: The fishing has been pretty darned good around this area. Almost all of the lakes in our surrounding area have been producing fish. I took a drive around Fountain Lake the other day and I did notice a lot of weeds along the shoreline on Edgewater Bay. It seems a little early to me. I also see that the boat ramp on Pickerel Lake has still not been repaired, nor has the dock been put in. I suppose the dock goes hand in hand with the ramp being repaired. Pickerel Lake was really giving up some dandy perch this winter. If you get a chance, try wetting a line in one of these lakes. St. Olaf and Beaver Lakes both have fishing piers for the public to use.

 

Please take the time to remember our troops that are serving now and those that have served before them. They are the reason that we have all of the Freedoms that we enjoy today.
