My age has caught up with me

This is the first time in many years that I have not fished on the fishing opener. I have never imagined that this would ever be possible, but I guess that my age has finally caught up with me. I have the same love for fishing that I’ve always had, but my body tells me to take it a little slower. I will be heading to the cabin for the first time in a week or two, and I am excited about that.

 

My neighbor, Chris, who has the cabin next to ours, texted me to tell me that he was up to his cabin for the first time last week. He checked on my cabin for me and said everything was fine except for a couple of downed trees across my driveway that he cleaned up for me. He’s always been a good neighbor and I appreciate that.

 

When my grandson, Trevor, took me out crappie fishing the weekend before the opener, it energized me and I was ready for more. Once I get some time to go to the cabin, it should energize me.

 

My brother-in-law, Lynn, has been catching some nice crappies in some of our area’s lakes. He stopped over the other night with some that he had fried up and they were mighty tasty. I don’t know if the landing at Pickerel Lake has been fixed yet, but the ice really messed it up this winter.

 

I can remember a few years ago when the only access on Pickerel Lake was one that my grandson, Trevor, and his friend, Josh, made. It was mostly mud, but they cleared the brush and rushes, so they could launch a boat. A couple of years after that the DNR put in a nice ramp along with a dock.

 

Until next time: This winter there were some nice perch being caught out of Pickerel and State Line lakes. My brother-in-law fished Pickerel Lake quite a bit this winter, but he didn’t catch any northern. I am pretty sure that there are some descent pike in that lake. With all of the perch in the lake, they should have plenty of food, so fishing for them might be a little tough. We have so many good fishing lakes right here in southern Minnesota, so do a little searching and pick a lake to try for a day. Both St. Olaf and Beaver Lakes have fishing piers that are for the public to use.

 

Please take the time to remember our troops that are serving now and those that have served before them. They are the reason that we have all of the Freedoms that we enjoy today.
