Shown here is a picture of Dick holding one of the crappies that they caught. He says some folks might recognize the lake that they were fishing on.

Fishing with Trevor

There are times that I think of the times that we spent camping when the boys were young. I recall the good times spent with our friends, Kenny and Georgette Bauman. Before we had a tent, we would go camping with them and share the tent-camper that they had. It had two rooms and a separate entryway, so we all had some privacy. It was a pretty unique camper.

We did that for a couple of years before we bought our first tent. We tented for a couple of years before we bought our pickup camper. I really liked that camper; it had a stove, refrigerator, furnace and a toilet. I bought that camper from Larry Pence when he had Valu Mart in Clarks Grove. I also bought my first two boats from Larry and finally my current boat that I have now. Larry was a friend and he always treated me fairly. I still miss seeing him around and talking fishing and outdoors with him.

The first boat that I bought from him was a 14-ft. Sea Nymph car topper that only weighed a hundred pounds. I had a pickup with a topper on it, so I could load the boat on top of the topper and tie it down. The old 10 horse Evinrude and gas tank would fit in the back along with camping and fishing gear. I got by with that for a few years until the boys started outgrowing the boat. It’s kind of ironic that the boat and the camper were getting smaller as the kids started getting bigger. The next boat was bigger, much wider, and perfect for the whole family. I needed a bigger motor and Larry once again had the perfect motor for me. It was an 18-hp Mercury and that motor would push that boat along perfectly. My grandson, Dylan, inherited that boat a few years after I got my present boat. Dylan did some modifications on that old boat like painting it, buying a different motor and trailer and putting in a new floor and new carpet. He keeps it at the cabin year-round, so he can use his garage for one of their vehicles. I am glad to see that he is taking care of that boat, and I am almost envious of him because that is the boat that I fished out of for many years while experiencing some great fishing adventures.

Until next time: Get out and enjoy the weather that we have been experiencing. It would be nice if it were just a few degrees warmer, but I am not complaining.

My grandson, Trevor, took me crappie fishing last week. We caught quite a few fish, but only kept enough for a meal for me and his grandma. As she was frying them up, she couldn’t believe how big those crappie fillets were. They were also mighty tasty.

Please take the time to remember our troops that are serving now and those that have served before them. They are the reason that we have all of the Freedoms that we enjoy today.
