The mural design represents many elements of Ellendale’s history, including the fact that it was a strategically located “railroad town.” Depicted on the mural holding a plat map is Thomas H. Brown, a railway employee who chose the site for Ellendale and laid out its streets. Standing nearby is Dr. E.Q. Ertel, who came to the town in 1908 right after finishing medical school and served as the area’s only doctor for many years. In front of them is Ellen Dale Ives, wife of railway president C.J. ives; it is said Thomas Brown named the town after her because of her reputation for philanthropy.
