Shown here are some pictures that were taken of a wildlife management area between lower and upper Twin Lakes while my wife and I were out for a drive on a sunny Sunday winter’s February afternoon.
What is Daylight saving really saving?

Once again, we are in daylight saving time, and I still don’t know why. Yes, it gets lighter earlier, but it also gets dark earlier. I suppose it is to make folks like me curious and keep older people off the streets because they don’t like to drive at night.
It looks like the farmers are pretty much wrapping up the harvest. The deer hunters will soon be out in the woods tracking deer. Deer hunting season marks the beginning of winter for me; not that I am a deer hunter, but it is how I track winter in my mind.
My son, Brian, learned archery hunting from his Uncle Lynn, and pursued it up until his first son came along. That’s when he found out that hunting for deer interfered with raising a family. Later on, his sons all got into waterfowl hunting and they do still participate in it, although in a lesser aggressive way than Trevor, the oldest. He still has his urge to hunt waterfowl along with his trusty black lab, Maggie.
He took her over to South Dakota pheasant hunting and he said she slept all the way home. It takes its toll on an older dog when they get up in years. Trevor said he was also pretty tired after all that walking.
Trevor was nice enough to drop off a couple of birds for me and his grandma. He asked her what parts she wanted, and she said the whole bird. That’s what she got, and she whipped up creamed pheasant and potatoes. It was very good, and I ate my share the first time and let her have the rest.
Now I will have to wait until spring to go fishing with Trevor again. I am so glad that he is a true outdoorsman, taking advantage of what nature provides, and never wastes anything. That’s what being a true sportsman means, and he makes Grandpa proud, just like all of my grandchildren. I can never seem to stop bragging about them whenever I get the chance.
All of my grandkids are outdoors people. Whether hunting, fishing, hiking, rock climbing or playing outdoor sports, they are all actively outdoors people in their own way.
Until next time: There is still time to enjoy the beauty of the countryside. Driving in the country in late fall has a sort of finality to it. The trees being mostly baren actually open up opportunities to see things that are covered most of the season. Embrace every season as long as you can.
Please take the time to remember our troops that are serving now and those that have served before them. They are the reason that we have all of the Freedoms that we enjoy today.
