Shown here is a nice bass that Dick caught on his lake a few years ago.
Looking forward to getting on the water

I have checked the snow depth on the DNR website, and it looks like it is almost snow-free where our cabin is. I have fallen for this scenario before, so I am a little skeptical. I ended up having to call a local independent contractor to bring his skid loader to clear the drive.
I am dreaming of being on the water again. I don’t really feel comfortable fishing alone anymore. Before, I would never hesitate to take the boat out by myself. In fact, I have always enjoyed spending time on the lake alone. I have always loved being on the lake in early morning as the sun just starts breaking the horizon. These are now precious memories that I will always cherish. I still have hopes of doing this once again. My sons and grandsons still make sure that I get out on the lake, to enjoy a day or two of fishing.
My first visit to the cabin usually consists of getting supplies put away and everything ready for the season. It also involves filling the bird feeders. This is my favorite part of opening the cabin. Once the food is put away and the power is on, I will fill the feeders and sit back and watch for the birds to show up.
I don’t believe there is a better sound to wake up to than birds chirping, loons calling or trumpeter swans with their unique call. I also like the sound of the red winged blackbird. That sound actually takes me back to my childhood when the nearby slough would be loaded with them.
When I climb up to the loft and get into bed, it is not unusual to hear many sounds coming from the forest. Some of those sounds are recognizable and others I still haven’t been able to figure out, even after all of these years.
I can distinguish between the calls of coyotes when they have an animal in their possession. Coyotes make a yelping sound, while wolves have more of a throaty howl. The sound of wolves howling is a very special sound that gives me chills; not out of fear, but in realizing how close I am to nature. The forest offers many opportunities to see wildlife up close, and this is an experience that I am truly grateful for.
Until next time: The area lakes are open for business as far as fishing goes. Panfish and perch are open now, but the Walleye, northern and bass season will be a little bit later.
Please take the time to remember our troops that are serving now and those that have served before them. They are the reason that we have all of the Freedoms that we enjoy today.
