Fall colors finally are here

I have some very fond memories of fall fishing. Sometimes the fishing isn’t the best but, in the fall, it is really hit and miss. If you can find the fish, they will be hungrily fattening up for winter. When the lakes turn over the oxygen levels are the same at every depth. This means that the Fish can be at any depth as they follow the baitfish.

 

I have had some pretty good luck when fishing in the fall and I have also really had to work for any success I would have. Not being an Al Linder, I have always been willing to try whatever it takes to put some fish in the boat.

 

I do not think that there is a better time to be on the lake than in the fall. The sun can feel much warmer in the fall, which can be a good thing on a chilly fall day.

 

I am pretty sure that using minnows, if you can find them, is the ticket in fall. I watched a guide from Northern Minnesota on a podcast, and he said that this is a great time to catch walleyes. He said that he likes to double hook his minnows and that is why he uses a jig with a long shank. Makes sense to me. The first person that taught me about double hooking a minnow was my mother. She was the one person that taught me so many little fishing tricks that I have practiced my whole life. As I grew older, my Uncle Ben was also an influence.

 

There have been times in the fall when it has been brutal. Reaching into a minnow bucket for a fresh minnow can make your hand go numb in a hurry. There is nothing more frustrating than having to put another jig on and then clipping the wrong piece of line when your fingers are cold. I hate to admit it, but I have done that more times than I would like to remember.

 

Trolling the shoreline on a crisp, sunny fall day is like you are in a painting as you move along the shoreline anticipating that bite. I don’t think a person ever forgets the feeling of a strike when you are trolling.
