Enjoying the cabin as a proud grandpa

I actually don’t know where the summer has gone, but it is fading fast. I’d guess that phrase might be from watching too many cowboy movies as a kid.

 

I plan on getting up to the cabin a time or two before the cold, snowy weather sets in. Fall fishing can be even more hit and miss than summer fishing. Once the PH level starts to turn, the fish can be anywhere. The trick is to outguess them, and, if you are a whiz at reading a locator screen, it can be a lot easier. I have never been too interested in modern technology when it comes to fishing. I do like the idea of following the contour of an unfamiliar lake. A good locator can give one a lot of information. I, myself, like fishing “old school” and by that, I mean following the weed edges and the contour of the shoreline. It paid off pretty well the last time I was on a lake with my grandson, Dylan. I have probably ruined him as far as walleye fishing goes. I do like to fish walleye, but chasing pike, bass and crappie have always come first for me. I guess trolling the shoreline has always been my go-to fishing technique. Now Dylan fishes so much like me it is almost scary. I know that he has that “old school” mentality, but he also knows how to read the graph.

 

I love fishing with Dylan and his cousin, Trevor. Both of them love fishing and can put fish in the boat. Trevor is more diverse in what he fishes for. His latest thing is lake trout, and he knows how to do that. He has yet to invite the old guy along on any big adventures, but he still takes me fishing, so that is all that matters. Dylan, on the other hand, loves spending time at the cabin with me, and, because we think alike when it comes to fishing, I know that we both enjoy the same things.

 

Until next time: When you can spend time with your kids, grandkids, or family in general, that’s what it is all about. I spent a lot of time with all of my grandsons when they were young and seeing them grow into fine young men who all appreciate the outdoors makes me feel very proud.
