Being creative was part of growing up

We have finally gotten a substantial amount of rain in our area. The old saying “when it rains, it pours” definitely has held true. Enough said about the weather.

As I look back over the years, I sometimes reflect on my time growing up north of town and of the many experiences growing up. I sometimes think about the summer days when a kid had to use his imagination for entertainment. Us neighborhood kids would get together to play baseball, football or games like kick the can, anti-I-over or tag. Tag and hide-and-seek were usually reserved for nighttime. Growing up when we did, we had no cell phones and didn’t use the phone much and if we did, we had to ask permission.

If we wanted to organize a baseball game or football game, we had to plan in-person, visiting the neighborhood kids to make the plans. Word of mouth was our networking, and it seemed to serve the purpose quite well.

Most of us had our own version of a soap box cart. They were quite crude, but they worked. One of the kids had an official soap box cart that his dad had built for him. That was a Cadillac compared to my cart. I had made mine with an old 2x12, some axles from an old wagon and wagon wheels. I had drilled a hole in the base board in the front and put the front wheels on a 2x4 with a hole drilled through the middle and the 2x12, and a bolt and washers holding the steering wheel together. I had an old clothesline rope attached to each side. If you went down a steep hill and hit something, the steering would make a quick turn and it could crunch your ankle if you weren’t paying attention.

Please take the time to remember our troops that are serving now and those that have served before them. They are the reason that we have all of the Freedoms that we enjoy today.
