NRHEG girls drop first two games of new season
Wed, 12/04/2024 - 11:00pm
The NRHEG High School girls' basketball team is off to an 0-2 start to the 2024-25 season.
The Panthers lost 57-45 to Triton, a team they trailed just 29-26 at halftime.
"The first game is always interesting to get things going for the season," said NRHEG coach Onika Peterson. "Triton was a tough team to start with. Their physicality, speed, and pressure caused us a lot of issues with our offense. This is the first time in awhile that it felt like we were killed on the offensive and defensive boards. We are looking to bounce back playing a little better Panther basketball at Fairmont on Tuesday.
Individually for NRHEG: Gabby Schlaak 8 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 steal; Ezra Boerner 5P, 1A, 1S; Quinn VanMaldeghem 6R, 2A, 2S, 2 blocked shots; Izley Boerner 7P, 4R, 1S; Clara Buendorf 1R, 1A, 1S; Camryn VanMaldeghem 15P, 6R, 3A, 2S, 2B; Chloe Stork 1R, 1A, 1S.
The Panthers fell short 52-44 to Fairmont. It was 25-17 at halftime.
Individually: Schlaak 2P, 8R, 1A; E.Boerner 4P, 2R, 1A; Q.VanMaldeghem 7P, 10R, 2A, 5S, 1B; I.Boerner 8P, 4R, 4A, 1S; Buendorf 1A; C.VanMaldeghem 15P, 4R, 6A, 4S; Stork 2R, 1A; K.Olson 8P, 4R, 1S, 2B.
"We jumped out to an early 10-2 lead to start the game," said Peterson. "We put ourselves in an eight-point hole going into halftime with three starters on the bench in foul trouble. We were able to cut the lead to two in the second half, but couldn't get over the hump."
After facing Maple River Tuesday, the Panthers travel to Medford Thursday. They face Sibley East in the Maple River Invitational Dec. 13 and take on Winona Cotter the next day.
