Gehrke prioritizes service, seeks New Richland Council seat

Ryan Gehrke, 42, is seeking election to the New Richland city council. Gehrke was appointed to an open council position on April 8, 2024 following a resignation of Mayor Chad Neitzel. This is his first time holding a government position.

 

A police officer, Gehkre resides in New Richland with his wife, Angela Gehrke. The two have three children, 9th grader Kenley, 6th grader Kashton and 4th grader Kaisley. They have lived in town for the past 15 years.

 

What do you consider the most important part of this job?

 

“The most important part of being a city councilperson is effective communication with the community,” Gehrke stated. “Listening to constituents, understanding their needs, learning their concerns about situations happening in their part of town, and being transparent about decisions fosters trust and ensures that decisions the council makes reflect the public's best interests. Balancing local priorities with budget constraints and collaborating with the other council members is crucial for success. Ultimately, it's about being a representative and advocate for the people and to promote New Richland as a strong community in southern Minnesota.

 

What particular strengths or experience do you bring to the position that you believe will help you do a good job?

 

“With 20 years in law enforcement, I have developed strong listening and problem-solving skills,” Gehrke answered. “I pay close attention to detail and highlight issues that others might overlook. My 16 years serving New Richland have given me an in-depth understanding of the community. Throughout my career and volunteer experiences, I have always prioritized service, and I will carry that commitment forward as a member of the New Richland city council.”

 

What do you feel are the city’s most important concerns at this time?

 

“How your tax dollars are spent is always a top priority,” Gehrke concluded. “Striking the right balance between providing essential services and keeping tax rates stable is crucial.

Additionally, addressing the county ditch that runs through town and finding solutions for the flooding issues we've faced over the past decade is important. Supporting local businesses and attracting new entrepreneurs will help create jobs and strengthen our tax base. Ultimately, my greatest concern is preserving the small-town atmosphere we cherish while embracing future growth.”
