A lot of fishing and a lot of memories

This past week was spent at the cabin with my son Brad and my grandson, Dylan. It was great spending time with both of them and enjoying quality time fishing numerous lakes. We started out fishing Spider Lake with little success, although we did catch a few small fish that were nothing to write home about.
The next day we visited Sand Lake, which is part of the Bowstring chain of lakes. This is a lake where we vacationed on many occasions and Brad wanted to go back there. We didn’t have much better luck on that lake either. As the afternoon progressed, the wind picked up and fishing became a little more difficult. This lake can get pretty rough on windy days as we found out. I have seen it rougher at times, but we decided to call it a day. Brad caught a couple of dandy Sand Lake perch, which we kept to hopefully add to for a meal.
After fishing Moose Lake, which is known for muskies, without much success we headed back for the cabin to have lunch before heading to this little lake not far from the cabin. This little lake has a public access and the best part is that it is surrounded by a National Forest and there are no cabins on this lake. This is a beautiful, deep lake. Although it has no walleye in it, there are northern, bass, panfish and perch to be caught. I can’t overstate the beauty of this lake, and, the evening that we were there, the weather was as perfect as it gets.
We have fished this little lake many times over the years and it never seems to disappoint.
The next day we fished another of our favorites and were not disappointed there either. Although we didn’t catch many fish of size, we did catch a variety of fish. We caught lots of small bass, a crappie and some sunnies. I also caught one keeper northern, which we kept to compliment the perch. We fried up that northern and those perch for supper, which made for a nice meal for the three of us. Brad did most of the cooking and he is a master at it. He discovered that we didn’t have any flour to use with the Panko, so he used corn starch to roll the fish in and it turned out so good and, it was nice and crispy. We had enough fish left over for Dylan to take home to his wife, Kloe. Dylan had brought steak, hamburger and pork sausage and we managed to devour most of that. It’s no wonder that I gained weight on this trip!
I really enjoyed this time spent with my son and grandson. Having those two there doing all the work made it easy for me. I appreciate spending time with these two doing something that we all live to do. I know that there will come a time when I will not be able to do these outdoors adventures, but I will cherish every moment until that time comes.
Until next time: I did manage to build a new suet feeder for the woodpeckers. I built it out of a small birch log that I had to cut up on my last solo trip. It took no time at all for one to show up. I hope that one of those big black bears that visit the cabin doesn’t destroy it.
Please show your support for our troops who are now deployed. These service men and women are making that sacrifice, so that we may have the many freedoms that we enjoy today.
