NRHEG’s new 5th grade teacher

NRHEG Elementary welcomes John Sand as the new grade five teacher this year. Originally from Cannon Falls, Sand currently resides in Austin, where he has previously taught for a year at Pacelli Catholic School and five years at Austin Public Schools.

 

Sand’s family includes a daughter going into tenth grade and a son entering seventh grade.  “They enjoy exercising, CrossFit, and biking,” he says. “They both enjoy playing sports and nature. I enjoy being in nature, especially visiting state parks, national parks, and wilderness areas. I try to visit the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness every year.” In fact, Sand says he could talk about the BWCA forever if someone gets him started, specifically: “the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and the importance of protecting it for future generations of humans and other living organisms.”

 

Students will leave his classroom at the end of the year with a desire to continually learn, Sand hopes. “I wanted to teach, to work with kids, to help them learn. I love learning and believe that we learn something new every day.” His favorite thing to teach? “I think my favorite part of teaching this year will be teaching mathematics.”

 

Sand also enjoys learning other languages, reading books, riding bicycles, visiting other countries, and cheering on the Vikings.
