Hartland University raises thousands for charity

Justin and Sheila Arndt of the Hartland University Bar held their fourth annual Ride to Remember on Saturday, Sept. 12, complete with a 50/50 raffle, silent auction, and, of course, the prize for the winning hand. A combined donation of nearly $5,800 was raised for the Free Flags for Veterans charity. The total came about thanks to the riders, the raffle and auction held the day of the ride, and donations both from individuals and from the Hartland Fire Department and the Wells American Legion.  

 

Close to 40 participants took part in the ride, which began around noon. According to Sheila, “There’s no starting gun to get everyone going, they can just leave at their own leisure.” Counting Hartland University as stop number one, there were 11 stops: TB3’s in Freeborn; VFW Post 1778 in Wells; American Legion Post 404 in Alden; Conger Bar; 26 Pit Stop Bar & Grill in Walters; Scarville Bar; American Legion Post 317 and Good Shot Golf & Sporting Clay, both in Emmons; and Forever Berma’s and Legion Post 454, both in Kiester.

 

Kevin Robran and Erin Rae were there to help out with the fundraiser. They were relaxing in the parking lot and making use of the “leave at your own leisure” rule while enjoying snacks in their side by side vehicle. The goal of the game is to visit each bar and receive a stamp to prove they were there. Players also receive a playing card at each stop and upon returning to Hartland University, the best hand is the winner. They don’t have to visit every bar, but more cards equal more chances at a better hand. 

 

The Free Flags for Veterans motto is: “Honoring those who served-one flag at a time.” Any veterans who provide documentation of their service will receive an American flag free of charge.
