Finally! A solo visit to the cabin

This past week I was able to visit the cabin.

After visiting the cabin for most of a week, I realized that doing many of the things that I once did is no longer possible. I guess that it is what you call a reality check. I couldn’t do many of the things that were commonplace in my younger days. Getting older is definitely a reality check.

All of that being said, it was still good to get up to the sound of the loons, trumpeter swans and many of the critters of the night that keep the imagination active. I am still able to navigate the steps to the loft, stiff joints and all. As I lay there in the dark, listening to the many sounds of the night is probably the most relaxing feeling you can have. I awoke from a deep sleep one night when I heard a critter outside moving around under the cabin. Hearing those sounds at night only tends to fuel the imagination.

Having a place in the woods has been a dream come true for someone that has always loved the outdoors. Even with the cabin being my dream, I still like to explore different lakes and landmarks around the area. Visiting different lakes has always been one of my favorite things to do when up north.

When I had a permanent campsite at Best Point on Lake Titonka, I still liked to visit some of the other lakes around that area. I would guess that this is the kid in me still trying to break out of my “old man” shell. Now I am 80 years old and that urge to explore still exists in the back of my mind. If I were to venture a guess, I would say that my imagination is still the part of me that has a bit of that young explorer in him.

Celebrate the end of summer at Minnesota state parks and recreation areas this Labor Day weekend.

Whether people are looking for a day trip or a full weekend, Minnesota state parks and trails have something everyone can enjoy this Labor Day weekend.

“For those looking to savor the last bit of Minnesota summer, state parks and trails have so many opportunities to get outside,” said Ann Pierce, director of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources’ Parks and Trails Division. “During the Labor Day weekend, we encourage everyone to take time to enjoy nature: whether that’s pitching a tent, paddling a river, hopping on your bike, or just going for a walk outside.”

DNR’s ParkFinder tool can help visitors find their perfect state park adventure by creating a customized search for what amenities they’d like, with everything from camper cabins and paved bike trails to swimming beaches and boat launches.

Please take the time to remember our troops that are serving now and those that have served before them. They are the reason that we have all of the Freedoms that we enjoy today.
