KNOW THE SIGNS - Sometimes, a rash that looks like a bullseye appears around the tick bite in the case of Lyme disease. Other symptoms could include a fever, headache and feeling very tired.

Stay safe outdoors

Protect yourself from Lyme Disease and tick bites
This summer, more people are heading out to parks, trails, and lakes. Many may return home with unwanted hitchhikers like ticks. Lyme disease and other tick illnesses are on the rise.

Warmer weather means more outdoor activities, which give these tiny bugs more chances to bite people and pets.

Ticks love to hang out in tall grass and wooded areas. They can carry bacteria that cause Lyme disease, a serious illness that can harm your joints, heart, and nervous system. While ticks are most active during warm months, they can come out anytime the temperature is above freezing.

Lyme disease often starts with a fever, headache, and feeling very tired. Sometimes, a rash that looks like a bullseye appears around the bite. If caught early, it can be treated easily. If left untreated, it can lead to bigger health problems later. Fortunately, you can prevent Lyme disease with a few easy steps.

Quick Tips to Prevent Tick Bites: Wear long sleeves and pants in grassy or wooded areas; use a repellent that contains DEET or permethrin; stick to marked paths and stay away from tall brush; use tweezers to pull the tick straight out.

"Time outdoors is great for our health, but so is staying safe," said Josh Ramaker, Community Health Supervisor. "Taking just a few simple steps can lower your risk of tick bites and Lyme disease."

If you find a tick on your skin, remove it right away. If you start to feel sick or notice a strange rash, call your doctor. For more information, visit CDC.Gov/Lyme or contact Josh Ramaker at 507-560-0102 or josh.ramaker@lesueurcounty.gov.
