A fresh snow can be peaceful

There are times when a snowfall can be a relaxing experience. I am not talking about when it occurs enough to be a backbreaker, but when it is just enough to cover the ground. When it snows at home, it comes with rules. You need to shovel the sidewalk, especially for the mail carrier. I can recall one year when we got about two to three inches each day. Just enough so that it had to be shoveled every day. That is like having a weight hanging over your head. It is not a backbreaker, but just enough so you know that you need to get it shoveled.

 

There have been a few times when I have been at the cabin in April when we have gotten a significant snowfall. A fresh snowfall in the woods gives me a peaceful feeling. I am not sure what it is about a fresh snowfall, but I get a very cozy feeling about it, especially when at the cabin.

 

I don’t plan on stumbling around in the woods any more, but I can still walk a few trails around the cabin. There were a few times when I would take my two oldest grandsons, Trevor and Taylor, up to the cabin in April to open it up and help clear any fallen trees.

 

After a couple of times going to the cabin in early spring, they realized that the lakes weren’t ice free, so fishing wasn’t an option. Those two boys were workers, and they cleared a lot of fallen trees when we were there. At that time, the cabin had no insulation, no loft and only a kerosene heater for heat. They slept on the floor in their sleeping bags.

 

After the boys figured out that they weren’t going to get any fishing in, they decided it wasn’t worth the trip up there, so I was on my own. They still came up in the summer and fall, but there was less work involved. Those boys were always good helpers. Once they learned how to clean fish, it made my life a lot easier.

 

Please take the time to remember our troops that are serving now and those that have served before them. They are the reason that we have all of the Freedoms that we enjoy today.
