First Lutheran of Waldorf serves 90

The ladies of the First Lutheran Church of Waldorf offered a community Christmas dinner over the luncheon hour at the town’s community center on Thursday, Dec. 4. Among those they served were city Mayor Rob Wilkening and Waseca County Sheriff Jay Dulas.

 

Ticket taker Cheryl Dobberstein shared that about 60 diners came in person, while another 30 requested takeout meals. She mentioned that all proceeds for the day go to Women in Mission for the church.

 

In the center’s kitchen was Marlys Nelson, who revealed that as many as 10 of First Lutheran’s ladies volunteered to plate and serve the meals, having started planning about six weeks ago. She mentioned the annual dinner at the community center has been a long-standing tradition; a decade or more ago it was offered by the local Senior Citizens Club, with First Lutheran having taken it over afterward.

 

Mayor Wilkening announced, “We want to thank First Lutheran for their wonderful talent. We want you to know the Veterans Memorial park is now taking requests for dedications. The day of the dedication will take place during Waldorf Days coming up on August 21, 22 and 23. Waldorf is a great city, we’re currently seeing an 18 percent population growth and that’s great news. The baseball field is still moving ahead, and just so you guys know how expensive that project is, the lights alone are $250,000, and they will hopefully be finished next year. Nothing is cheap. We have two politicians, Representative Peggy Bennett and Senate leader Gene Dormac. Please call your reps and tell them we need funding. We need it not only for the baseball field, but also the sewer line we need installed. I have been applying for grants and bonds, so we’ll see what plays out there.”

 

Not to be outdone, Sheriff Jay Dulas also had a few words to add, “Hello, everyone. It’s always nice to see you. Our Waseca County Sheriff’s year in review: we are currently looking for a new dispatcher. We have received 10,000 calls this year and the year isn’t even done, but we’ve so far survived. Thanks to the recent snowfall, there have been no major accidents. We are also working on a new justice center, hopefully next year. We’re here if you need us and please remember this is a busy time of year for fraud. Don’t give money to someone you don’t know. Same with email links; if it looks suspicious, it is. Your bank will not call to ask for money; neither will the IRS.” A person spoke up in the crowd and added, “The IRS does not call you unless you have called them first.”

 

The Ladies of the First Lutheran Church of Waldorf said the food for the day was prepared by Infinity Catering of Janesville. Everyone who ate enjoyed a Thanksgiving style meal of turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, corn, and cheesecake or cranberry[oe  for dessert.
