NRHEG Field Show a first at Marching Classic

He said band members were excited as they prepared for the appearance, and energized by the experience itself.

 

“We’re finding new ways to be a success,” he observed during a recent conversation. “We’re seeing some of the exciting things that are possible for a small band.”

 

Along with competition, participation in the Marching Classic offers clinics with experienced band judges leading sessions and providing feedback and suggestions. Schaefer referred to the Panthers’ one-hour session as “a great way to start our day.” He observed clinic leader Steve Citta “got the band thinking about many new things” and helped the musicians “strive for new levels with our sound and focus.” He also appreciated that Citta’s input tended to “solidify some ideas we have been working on this year.” 

 

The 20-member Panther Band was the first to take the field at Saturday’s Marching Classic, with a 5:45 start time. As they took position, the program announcer mentioned that, although the Panthers had appeared in numerous Marching Classic parades, this was the first time the band was taking part in the field show competition. The crowd, which consisted of band enthusiasts from across southern Minnesota, responded with energetic applause and cheers.

 

Schaefer said he made it a priority over the past summer to find a combination of musical numbers which suited the selection of instruments and musicians in the band and also followed a theme. Included in the band’s eight-minute performance were “Shake it off” and “Shout it out.”

 

The appearance at the Marching Classic was the group’s first performance of the year, and will be followed by pep band appearances at upcoming football and volleyball games.

The field show music and movement will be part of the Oct. 27 Marching Indoor Concert.
