Watching the seasons change at the cabin

I am up at the cabin again writing this week’s column. It is Sunday and raining, but I got to watch the Vikings win, so that helps. It is supposed to quit by tomorrow, when I hope to get some mowing done and maybe even do a little fishing.

 

The soft wood trees and some of the bushes are starting to change their colors. The beauty of the north woods is unbelievable when the colors are at their peak. I can only hope that I will be up here for that.

 

When I am up here now, the temperatures are supposed to be in the low 70’s and the 50’s at night. That is right down my alley, as my dad used to say.

 

The birds showed up shortly after I filled the feeders. The hummingbird feeder was still half full, so I knew that they had left for the winter, bluejays, black capped chickadees and nuthatches are still here and will, no doubt, be here through the winter.

 

My wife, my son, Brian and I were up here one April a few years ago. There was still snow on the ground, and there were those three bird species there, along with some juncos. That was a memorable time. I can get excited about being at the cabin just about any time of the year.

 

It was once my goal always to be fishing whenever I went anywhere, but now just being outdoors enjoying nature in all its beauty has moved into first place on my priority list. There are so many wonderful things to enjoy right here in our own state of Minnesota that we need to look for. If we just take some time to slow down and enjoy what surrounds us, we may be richly rewarded.
