NRHEG open house proves successful

An estimated 400 or more people attended a six-hour “open house” at the NRHEG Secondary school from 2 to 8 p.m. Aug. 27. Principal Grant Berg commented he felt the event served its purpose, which was to increase the number of children and families attending the start-of-year orientation and teacher conferences.

 

“We wanted them to come in and meet their teachers, find their lockers, locate the classrooms they will be in and relieve some anxiety before school starts,” said Berg. Class meetings invited the sixth-, ninth- and twelfth-graders to acquire information tailored to their respective pivotal years.

 

Parents and students moved freely throughout the building. Many took advantage of a light meal consisting of hot dogs, chips and water. Hot dogs were donated by Geneva Meats, Neighbor’s Meats, and Steve’s Meat Market. Sassy Sota and Kona Ice trucks were located in a west parking lot selling beverages. Court Sports sold Panther-themed clothing. An activity calendar and poster produced by the NRHEG Star Eagle were made available at no cost.

 

Representatives of the school lunch, transportation, technology program and more were available at a line of tables in the main commons to answer questions, help with registration and paying fees, and provide guidance. Students were invited to take part in a schoolwide scavenger hunt and enter completed forms in drawings for an activity pass or other prizes.

 

“This is a good way to get everything taken care of at once,” commented one parent in the process of completing paperwork. “The treats and the free food are a nice touch, too.”

 

Berg commented he was pleased with the strengthened attendance, saying, “It seemed very successful, and now we hope to build on it for next year.”
