Thompson seeks election to NR Council

Melissa Thompson, 52, is seeking election to the New Richland City Council. She has called New Richland home for nearly two decades.

 

Thompson is married to Mitch Thompson. Together they have children Jordan (Mariana), Braeden (Victoria), and Kaylei. They also have two grandchildren.

 

Thompson works for the State of Minnesota in the CBS/MSOCS division and is a supervisor at the vocational program

 

If elected, this would be Thompon’s first government position.

 

What do you consider the most important part of this job?

 

“Being a voice and listening to the people and business owners of New Richland,” Thompson answered. “Being able to bring forward issues that the people and businesses of New Richland bring forward. Being an honest and trustworthy person.”

 

What particular strengths or experience do you bring to the position that you believe will help you do a good job?

 

“I am an active listener, I am organized, I have great attention to detail,” Thompson continued. “I have history of working with Unions and was the President of AFSCME Local 607 for 5 years. During this time, I was able to learn about the legislative process and work with legislators on Safe Staffing for my work area. I have also attended and participated in several contract negotiations.”

 

What do you feel are the city’s most important concerns at this time?  

 

“I feel that the city’s concerns are taxes and infrastructure,” Thompson concluded. “I think that the city needs to look into the recent flooding and sewer backups that keep happening to our homes. I think that the city could also work with Waseca County to help with these issues. I want to make a difference in our community.”
