Superintendent advocates for education at state capitol

I was honored to join six fellow superintendents from the south-central region of Minnesota to meet with members of the state legislature. Our visit was an important opportunity to advocate for our schools and discuss critical issues facing education in Minnesota today.

The conversation covered a range of topics vital to the success of our students and the sustainability of our schools. One key focus was the Read Act, a legislative initiative aimed at improving literacy outcomes for Minnesota students. We shared our perspectives on how the act is being implemented and the support schools need to ensure its success.

School funding was another pressing topic. We emphasized the challenges rural districts face in securing equitable funding and how current levels impact the quality of education we can provide. Additionally, we addressed concerns over state mandates that often come without adequate funding, leaving districts to absorb costs that strain already tight budgets.

Our discussions also highlighted the overall state of education in Minnesota, from student needs to staff shortages and the importance of fostering strong partnerships between schools and communities. These conversations were both productive and necessary as we work to create a better future for our students.

As your superintendent, I am committed to ensuring that the voices of our district are heard at the state level. Advocacy efforts like these are essential to bringing about positive change and securing the resources our students and staff need to thrive.
