Proud of our past, excited for our future

There is something special about the start of a new school year.

 

The hallways are full again. Classrooms come back to life. Buses are rolling, activities are underway, and our buildings once again have the energy that only comes when our students and staff are together.

 

As we begin the 2026-27 school year, I am excited about what lies ahead for NRHEG Public Schools. I am also reminded that the work we are doing today is built upon a foundation established long before many of us arrived.

 

Our district has a rich history. Before there was NRHEG, generations of students were educated in the New Richland-Hartland and Ellendale-Geneva school districts. Those schools were important parts of their communities, and they established traditions and expectations that continue today. More than 35 years after those districts came together, NRHEG continues that proud tradition.

 

We should take pride in that history.

 

But honoring our history does not mean simply doing things the way they have always been done.

 

Education is changing rapidly. Technology continues to reshape how we work, communicate, learn, and live. Artificial intelligence is changing industries and workplaces. The skills our students will need after graduation continue to evolve. Some of the careers our youngest students will eventually pursue may look very different by the time they leave NRHEG.

 

Our responsibility is to prepare them for that world.

 

That means continuing to provide strong academics while also helping students learn how to communicate, collaborate, solve problems, think critically, adapt to change, and use technology responsibly. It means giving students opportunities to discover what they are good at and what they are passionate about. Most importantly, it means making sure an NRHEG education prepares students not just to graduate, but to succeed in life outside of school.

 

At the same time, preparing for our future requires us to take care of what we already have.

 

Our buildings and grounds are community assets, and maintaining them requires thoughtful planning and investment. We need to continue looking ahead so that our facilities remain safe, functional, welcoming, and capable of supporting the educational programs our students need.

 

None of this happens without a strong community.

 

One of NRHEG's greatest strengths has always been the communities behind our schools. Our district represents several communities, but when it comes to our kids, we share a common purpose. Students benefit when families, staff, businesses, organizations, alumni, and community members work together and believe in the importance of their schools.

 

That also means being willing to have honest conversations.

 

We should celebrate what is going well at NRHEG, and there is a great deal worth celebrating. We have dedicated staff members, talented students, supportive families, strong programs, and people throughout our communities who continually step forward to help.

 

We should be proud of those things.

 

At the same time, pride does not mean pretending everything is perfect. Strong organizations recognize where improvement is needed. We can respectfully identify the areas that need our attention, listen to one another, work through disagreements, and find solutions together. We can appreciate how far we have come while continuing to ask how we can become even better.

 

That is what makes this time exciting.

 

We have a strong history behind us, tremendous opportunities in front of us, and communities filled with people who care deeply about our students and our schools.

 

The world around us will continue to change. Education will continue to change. NRHEG will need to change with it while holding tightly to the values that have served our communities for generations.

 

That is the challenge before us.

 

And we are ready for it.
