NRHEG Secondary school traffic adjusts to incomplete construction

NRHEG Transportation director Dan Schmidt explained to people attending the secondary site’s recent open house that the building’s large east parking lot will serve a major role in adjusting traffic flow as the school year begins.

 

South Ash Avenue, the city street directly in front of the building, has been under construction all summer; contractors are currently about two weeks behind schedule, at least partly because of repeated, heavy rainfall. As of the open house, the street in front of the school was drivable, but not paved.

 

Also under construction, and not yet drivable, is South Broadway Avenue. Typical school day traffic flow has been for buses to park along the front sidewalk of the school when delivering or picking up passengers, then proceed south on Ash Avenue, go one block west on Southeast Fourth Street, and then back north to Highway 30 along Broadway.

 

Until construction is sufficiently complete, Schmidt said, buses will turn around at Fourth Street and proceed back up Ash Avenue to Hwy 30.

 

As for parents wishing to pick up or drop off students, they will also be able to pull up along the sidewalk at the front of the school. Rather than turning around, however, typical-sized vehicles will be expected to turn into the large east parking lot and drive through it to return to Hwy. 30. The southeast corner of the parking lot will be reserved for parents of very young students who wish to park their cars and walk inside to accompany their children to their destinations.
