NRHEG purchasing adjoining property

After five of the seven school board members voted in favor at their Sept. 15 meeting, the NRHEG school district plans to spend $70,000 to purchase property located at 302 S. Broadway in New Richland. The lot abuts against the northeast corner of the largest secondary school parking lot, and includes a garage structure which extends about 12 feet onto land owned by the district.
According to superintendent Michael Meihak, the district had communicated with the property owner prior to the construction of the new parking area, but negotiations to have the building shortened did not work out.
Meihak expects the purchase to be complete sometime in October, and said the district plans to seek bids for the removal of the garage soon after. With the garage gone, he observes the entry into the parking lot from State Highway 30 will be more open, perhaps offering more flexibility when the state department of transportation carries out its plans to modify curbs and sidewalks along the highway next summer.
Regarding plans for the house and remainder of the property, Meihak classifies those as “to be determined.” He says possibilities include carrying out any needed repairs and then reselling the property or looking for ways to enhance and adapt it for educational use.
