New Richland Library tells a turkey tale

The New Richland Public Library held another Storytime Hour the foggy morning of Tuesday, Nov. 25. With the big kids in school, the little kids dominated the library grounds, but when it came time to pay attention, they did a pretty good job.

 

Librarian Kathy Kronebusch was in charge for the day. Whe had little toy cars and tractors and micro-farm equipment for the little ones to play with. Once story time started, however, the kids sat near the back of the library in rapt attention. The song was called, “Tom the Turkey” and it had to do with the colorful feathers turkeys have. Before Kronebusch read the book titled, “Run Turkey Run,” she had the children say what they were most thankful for. One child shyly answered, “I’m thankful for candy.” Another said, “I’m thankful for my mom and my grandma.” One said, “I am thankful for food and I don’t want to go to bed early at all.” Each respondent  gave the question serious thought before answering. The book was about how stressful the day before Thanksgiving can be for a turkey, the kids seemed to like it. 

 

Afterwards each child was given a different colored feather for the art project that was part of the event. If they didn’t like the feather they were given, they had an opportunity to cut a hand-drawn feather of their own design in any color they wanted. There was also brown construction paper for the turkey himself, glue sticks, crayons and markers to finish the job. If that didn’t trip the kiddos' triggers, there was also a new type of corn on the cob game they could try. It was the kids themselves who were going to glue corn kernels back onto the cobs, so they could compare their work to a real corn cob full of corn and see which one was better.  

 

Currently available at the New Richland Library through the end of December are Secret Santa Reads. Folks can browse the selected books, fall in love with the clues on the tags, pay and take their secret gift home, then unwrap under the tree at home (or do it there.) There’s romance, mystery, fantasy, thriller, cozy or holiday feel; for kids and adults. All proceeds help support the activities of the New Richland Friends of the Library.
