New Richland contest decided by popular vote

The winner of this year’s $100 prize in the New Richland Halloween decorating contest will be decided by popular vote using an online ballot. Households wishing to be considered had to register with City Hall by Oct. 10. Voting will be open from Oct. 20 to 23 on the city’s Facebook page. The winner will be announced on Oct. 24.

 

Sharon Eckart, who helped judge the contest last year, says she likes the idea of a “popular” vote, and encourages eligible individuals to go out, have a look at the various entries, and place their votes based on merit.

 

“Having people vote really adds to the fun,” said Eckart. “It will encourage people to go have a look at all the creative ideas and energy these folks are putting into it.”

 

She also mentioned she hopes the prize gives people a motive to take part, but goes on to say it’s all really about the fun and the sense of community the event can inspire.

 

“Everybody has different things they like,” she concedes, “and Halloween may not be everyone’s favorite. But it is a big favorite.” She notes the weather is much more conducive to decorating at this time of year than it is in December.

 

Eckart mentions that, based on the decorating that’s taken place so far, voters will have to make some decisions about their personal stance: is cute and kid-oriented the way to go, or unsettling and frightening?

 

“As for me, I think I’ll know the one I want to vote for when I see it,” she speculates. “I just love Halloween, so the chance to move around town and see what everyone is doing is the real win as far as I’m concerned.”
