Majesky takes Longenecker’s place on council

Members of the Waldorf City Council voted during their regular August 12 meeting to install city resident Jim Majesky as its newest member. Majesky replaces former councilman, Jay Longenecker, who is no longer eligible to serve in the position because he is now a resident of Janesville. 

 

Two in-town lots were sold for a dollar each under the condition houses will be built there within the next two years.

 

Ron Fischer, in charge of maintenance for Waldorf, said the dugout once located at the intersection of North Street and Third Avenue is no longer there. Mike Weyhrauch was hired to remove and dispose of the old dugout because it had caved in and was no longer safe for use. The pedestrian walkway in front of the community center will be repainted by the end of this week.

 

The water and sewer department reported that, as of July 31, four customers had either not paid or only partially paid their bills. A total of about $1,300 remains uncollected and one building has had services suspended.  

 

The St. Paul engineering firm of Short Elliot Hendrickson (SEH), requested that its contractually set “not-to-exceed” amount for services rendered in 2024 be increased from the original $5,000 to $10,000. The council approved the change.

 

The Waldorf Fire Department (WFD) was granted permission to transfer $50,000 from its savings account to a Certificate of Deposit. The transfer leaves more than $54,400 in WFD account. 

 

Mayor Rob Wilkening applied for a $10,000 grant from the Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation to go towards the renovations for the new field for the Waldorf Wood Ducks. A fundraiser has been scheduled at Papa Olie’s Bar and Grill; raffle tickets are available.

 

The problem with the alleyway behind Fourth Ave will be tabled until next spring. Right now, the alleyway is grass and dirt. When it rains, the alley becomes impassable, especially for larger trucks such as propane deliveries or garbage removal. When the budget is reassessed, this issue will be approached again by the council.

 

The League of Minnesota Cities has grants and funds from tourists bringing money into the area, that money is being matched by the DNR to go towards park renovations for Waldorf.

 

The next Waldorf City Council workshop will take place at 6:30 p.m. on August 26.

 

 Charlie Barne’s property Parcel D was split so part of it could be placed under the conservancy of the city. Council members expressed a wish that the city have more Christmas lights on display this year than in 2023; a decision was made to increase the numbers. It was mentioned QR codes have been added to the city website to provide a shortcut for residents paying their water bills. Ron’s will asses the exhaust fan in the Fire Department area. A few Waldorf signs will be upgraded, including those for handicap parking, the post office, and the library. The street in front of First Lutheran Church of Waldorf will receive seal coating in the near future.
