The St. Peter Lutheran Church of Otisco held their annual Ice Cream Social over the dinner hour on Sunday, July 19. The good Lord provided plenty of sunshine and a light wind for a peaceful summer dinner.
Harlan Gekeler accepted free-will donations. Serving began at 4 p.m. but he said, “I got here at three this afternoon.” He thought for a moment and said, “I’ve been a member here since 1969.” He was sitting at a small card table that had an empty water pitcher in front of him. Those coming through the line had plates with food and placed money in the pitcher. Proceeds from the day go towards church maintenance.
Pat Lewer, organizer for the day, approached and said, “The weather has been good, and the past few years it’s been good. Hopefully our luck holds out. I got here today at 10 a.m. and we’ve been ready since 11:30.” St. Peter’s bought the hamburger for the sloppy joes, and the buns and potato salad. Continued Lewer, “Natalie Fell bought all the ice cream. The pies (We have 35 of them.) were all donated by the congregation. I myself made an apple pie. Everyone who has shown up tonight has been so generous.”
