Geneva looking for a pool manager, lifeguards

During their regular monthly meeting the evening of Tuesday, Feb. 11, members of the Geneva city council selected Contemporary Lumen lighting out of the Twin Cities for its project to replace eight light poles in the city. The price of $7,040 per pole includes an installed concrete footing and base and a five-inch diameter, 25-foot tall pole. Each pole would have an “arm” for hanging banners, a flag mount, and an electric outlet near the top.  

When concerns were expressed that reaching the outlet 18 feet in the air would require hiring a boom truck, Eric Hauser, who presented this engineering update, said he didn’t know whether it is possible to have a plugin any lower, but he would check.

Regarding the city’s planned sidewalk update, it was reported 60 percent of the plans were submitted to Steele County agencies on Feb. 10. The next step in this process will be to approve plans and specs and order advertisements for bids, including reviewing the engineer’s estimate and project financing by March 11. Specifications are to be submitted to the state department of transportation “district state aid” office in March, with a department of transportation review in April. The hope is that the bid and grant agreement will be finalized by mid-May, with construction beginning this summer. 

Matt Web reported the Geneva Fire Department has received four approved radios from the Medford Fire Department. They must be given a brief inspection before they are authorized for use, but Web said the radios are inspection ready.

Winnebago Communications is going to lay cable through town, this was already approved. The city council is required to locate and is going through the engineering firm Bolton & Menk.

Council members learned that, although there have been some applications for positions at the Geneva Community Pool, a number of roles remain unfilled. They were warned that a lack of employees might mean the pool will not be open this summer. Individuals interested in the jobs can begin the application process by calling 507-568-5108.

The city-wide sanitary sewer televising project has led to a pipe rating map for the first two years, 2023 and 2024. There are two years remaining on the contract with a possible sanitary sewer rehabilitation project after information for the whole town is available, summer 2027 being the soonest and only if necessary.

The Geneva liquor license is up for renewal in April, this is in regard to George’s and the Geneva Bar & Grill.
