Geneva Cancer Auction sees attendance swell

The Forty-Second Geneva Cancer Auction started on Friday, Jan. 9 and Saturday the 10th with the final drawing the following Saturday, Jan. 17. The auction's mission reads: Established in 1985, the Geneva Cancer Auction raises funds for cancer research for the sole purpose of eradicating cancer. On Friday night on behalf of the Game Feed in November, Mayor Steven Bailey donated a check for $29,000 to the Geneva Cancer Auction to a roaring round of applause.

 

On Saturday the auction started to a very full house with even more people standing and waiting at the doors looking hopefully for a table or seat to open up, or even a stool at the bar, which was shoulder to shoulder. With a snow shower starting and a pretty hefty wind blowing in the full parking lot outside, it was nice and cozy inside as the auctioneer started auctioning. mThere were assorted items like a chainsaw and automated fertilizer for the farm auction which started at 3 p.m. Haley Habana and her mother were going to also donate their hair at 5:30 p.m. on behalf of their grandmother, who died of cancer.

 

Barb Kuchenbecker, one of those helping out for the day, was asked about how many things will be up for auction. She said, “People have been bringing in items at all hours, and they’ve brought so much, we really have no idea how many auction items we have. We’ll just be selling things as we come across them.”

 

Dennis and Diane Deml were one of the spectators watching the auctioneer get going, who were waiting for a seat to open up. Stuck at the door, they proved they were both a lady and a gentleman with their patience. They attended the Saturday afternoon auction in part because of their 3-year-old grandson who had AML (Acute Myeloid Leukemia). Diane said, “We also attended the benefit in November. Our grandson, Krew Haase, has AML. He’s been undergoing treatment and that’s all been working out. Right now it’s in remission.”
