'This doesn't look good for the deer hunting'

A deer hunting we did go, in snow and cold weather.

As Genie and I travel north, we remember previous trips north. One was driving to get there in a blizzard along highway 2 near Walker.

Our first stop was for lunch at McDonald’s in Garrison, Minn. (It is the smallest town by population in the world to have a McDonald's.) There were lots of Gulls on Mille Lacs Lake as we drove by. No snow with temp in the fifties, even boats of people fishing!!

Just north of the Big Walleye fish on Mille Lacs, we turned off of highway 169 onto highway 6 and at Remer, Minnesota west to our destination, staying at Blue Water Resort on Leech Lake.

An interesting observation from Mille Lacs to Leech Lake.

We didn't see any live or road kill deer. (Genie and I both remarked, “This doesn't look good for the deer hunting.”

We arrive at our destination about 4 p.m., get the car unpacked, put out bird food and hollowed out pumpkins for the wildlife.

After 298 miles we were ready to enjoy our stay at Blue Water Lodge on a bay of Leech Lake. A very beautiful setting.

The kitchen, dining room and living room are all in one open space on the same level with a thermostat controlled fireplace and fan looking out on a deck looking over a bay on the lake.

Friday morning was breakfast at Hardee's, grocery shopping at Super One in Walker and back to where we are staying. (We saw people fishing in Walker Bay on Leech Lake.)
In the afternoon on Friday, I scouted for deer sign, but didn't see much. Saturday a.m. I guarded the area where I shot the deer that got up and ran away last year. No deer did I see, only heard one shot. It was not a real good weather day outside. (It rained and snowed enough to get very cold and wet.)

Sunday morning we attended church at Trinity Lutheran church in Cass Lake. The church is in the process of sharing a pastor with another Lutheran church. (Kind of like Central Freeborn Lutheran church and East Freeborn Lutheran church sharing a pastor.)

Pastor Peter, a retired Lutheran pastor, was the pastor filling in for a few Sundays until the sharing process is completed. Pastor Peter is one who brings the world going on into his sermons. He is very good with a sermon. (One can say, “Thank you for the great message!!”)

Sunday afternoon, I looked around, but not much sign.

One Monday morning Genie attended the ladies Bible study with lunch at Trinity in Cass Lake. I watched the birds enjoy the bird food we put on the deck. I saw blue jays, woodpeckers, nuthatch, chick-a-dees, ravens, eagles, grosbeak, plus squirrels, both gray and black.

The tales of the great North to be continued next week.
